Suspect surrenders in Whiteville murder investigation

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- A man is in custody after turning himself into police a day after a shooting in Whiteville left a man dead. Whiteville Police say Torres Newkirk surrendered earlier today.

According to the report, an officer responded to a call about shots fired at Brookberry Park Apartments around 6 p.m. Sunday. The report says witnesses told the officer that someone had been shot and taken to the hospital by car. They also said they saw a white Mazda 626 leaving the scene.

The victim, Joshua Andre Williams of Chadbourn, died a short time later at Columbus Regional Medical Center. Williams just turned 20 Tuesday.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections website, Newkirk, 23, has been convicted of two crimes in Columbus County: simple assault/affray in 2007 and carrying a concealed weapon in 2011. He was sentenced to probation for both misdemeanors.
