History Lesson

Africans themselves played a large role in the slave trade. They sold their captives (which were usually from neighboring or enemy ethnic groups) to European buyers, which was a common practice during that era. At times, kings and businessmen would sell criminals to the buyers so that they could no longer commit crimes in that area. Most other slaves were obtained from kidnappings, or through raids that occurred at gunpoint through JOINT ventures between the Africans and the Europeans.
