Fellow Republican says he'll challenge Warren for Brunswick Co. Commission

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A Southport man says he will run for the Brunswick County Commission seat held by a controversial fellow Republican.

Dr. Joe Agovino announced today he will challenge Commissioner Charles Warren for the Republican Nomination for County Commissioner from District 3.

Agovino says he ran successfully against Warren for Dosher Hospital Trustee in 2005 and was reelected to that position in 2011. He says he will continue his interest in serving the healthcare needs as well as the other needs of the citizens of Brunswick County as County Commissioner.

Agovino has a PhD in psychology, MSW in social work, Master of Professional Studies in criminal justice and a BA in sociology. In addition to being a licensed Social Worker, he has been a NC Real Estate
Broker since 2000 and is currently with Intracoastal Realty on Oak Island.

Agovino said in a statement he is running "to give back to the community and to make a good county even better."

Warren has been embroiled in controversy of late. The County Commission censured him last year for refusing to step down from the Social Services Board after the commission adopted a policy to not serve on community boards. Last month Warren, as chair of the Social Services Board, threw another member and a reporter out of a meeting. He was then kicked out of the next County Commission meeting. Tuesday County Commissioners will hold a hearing to see if there is cause to remove Warren from the Social Services Board.
