On the surface, this sounds like the beginning of a bad joke; "A man walks in to rob a gun store with a hammer..."
Then again, it's a very sad situation. A person chose to attempt to commit a crime and paid the ultimate price. The store owner didn't have the luxury of asking the robber if he was "mentally unstable" or if he actually planned to use the hammer if he didn't get his way. It was a tragedy set in motion by the robber and he alone had control of the outcome.
What if the robber were successful in his quest? Stolen guns in the hands of a crook? It's entirely possible that the store owner prevented future gun-related crime by stopping this person.
