Titan site in Castle Hayne wins Energy Star award

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- As opponents continue to fight a proposed cement plant in Castle Hayne because of environmental impacts, the plant's parent company has won an environmental award.

Titan America's Roanoke Cement Company says four of its distribution terminals have achieved the the US EPA's Energy Star Challenge for Industry. It recognizes plants that demonstrate a commitment to the environment by achieving a 10-percent reduction in energy intensity within five or fewer years.

The facilities that got the award include the terminal in Castle Hayne. It's the same site for the proposed Carolinas Cement plant. The terminal also received the SHARP award by the NC Department of Labor in September.
