Obama campaign registers voters at MLK Day Parade

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- While Republican presidential candidates get ready to debate tonight in Myrtle Beach, President Obama's campaign used this MLK Day to register voters.

Volunteers for Obama for America took today's MLK Day Parade in Wilmington as an opportunity to reach a lot of folks and get them signed up to vote. Although they are rooting for the President to stay in office, volunteer Carter Jewell said it does not matter what party you belong to. She just wants people to be informed and aware of the upcoming election.

"Martin Luther King was all about empowerment of people, empowerment of your voice, finding your voice in your community, so we are out here today not only to register people and to get them to vote, but also just to empower them and to make them aware that they can make a difference," Jewell said. "Their voice is important, and it does need to be heard in November."

Jewell said she's hopeful about President Obama's campaign and that the American people are seeing what she says is a great president in action.
