Many fooled into eating more calories at 'healthy restaurants'

READ MORE:
Think your diet would benefit from food at a "healthy restaurant"? A new study shows how we can get fooled into eating many more calories by so-called "healthy" menu items. Some sandwich shops such as Subway run commercials claiming to be a healthy alternative to McDonald's or Burger King. New research finds that labeling foods as "healthy" can cause people to make unfortunate other meal choices. When a sandwich came from a restaurant that claimed it was "healthy," consumers guessed it contained 35 percent fewer calories than sandwiches from other restaurants. In certain cases, the "healthy" main course had 50 percent more calories than the unhealthy one, just as some Subway sandwiches pack more calories than a Big Mac. Researchers found that with so-called "healthy" main courses, people often chose sugared beverages, starchy side dishes and desserts to go with it --- adding a whopping 131 percent more calories to the meal. Experts say that people can reduce their chances of falling into the "healthy food" trap if they consider the ingredients in the dish and the calories it likely contains. A turkey sandwich or grilled chicken is only healthy when it's not accompanied by soda, chips and dessert.
