ASHEBORO, NC (AP) -- A chimpanzee has given birth to a female at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, raising the zoo's chimp population to a dozen.
The zoo said Wednesday that 41-year-old Tammy gave birth to an infant named Ebi. It's the second birth of a chimp at the zoo since August 2010.
Zoo officials say mother and child are doing well. They say the mother is caring for the infant without any intervention from zoo staff members.
Curator Ken Reininger says it will be at least summer before they go on exhibit.
Seventeenth-month-old Nori can be seen daily, weather permitting.
