Laney wrestler breaks 21 year old record with 5 second pin

READ MORE: Laney wrestler breaks 21 year old record with 5 second pin

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- Just as soon as the Marcel Burns wrestling match on Saturday started, it ended. Laney's Marcel Burns only needed five seconds to pin his Croatan High School opponent on Saturday. Former Laney state champion Tyrone Simpson previously held the record in New Hanover County with a six second pin. Simpson was part of the 1992 state championship wrestling team under head coach Alan Sewell. Simpson didn't wrestle in college, but he did play college football briefly at the University of Maryland.

Marcel Burns currently has a 32-6 record this season. The record pin occurred at a home meet last Saturday. "When I first looked at my opponent he looked nervous so I decided to take advantage of it," Burns said. "He was a little heavy on his front foot so I snapped him down. I ran a move on him called "The Iowa" and I just took him straight to his back. I believe the record will last a while. It was so fast. I don't see anyone beating it anytime soon."

The state record for a pin in high school wrestling in North Carolina is three seconds. The state record is shared by four different wrestlers. Marcel Burns will be back on the mat on Saturday when Laney participates in the Mideastern Conference Championship Meet at Ashley High School.
