Rep. McIntyre says dredging necessary at Carolina Beach inlet

READ MORE:

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Congressman Mike McIntyre made a stop in Carolina Beach
Friday to discuss dredging of the Carolina Beach inlet. McIntyre was joined by
local leaders for a boat tour aboard the Royal Winner.

He discussed the need for dredging in the inlet to maintain the draw of
tourists to the area and safeguard against potential hazards for
fishermen.

We asked McIntyre if dredging is the right solution as opposed to allowing
Mother Nature take its course.

“You've got to have dredging to maintain the intracoastal waterway,”
McIntyre said. “It's much like an interstate highway if it's just built
and then nobody ever tends to it you're going to have problems with that
highway. It’s going to be worn and used. We want to make sure it's open
not just for commercial use but for recreational use because that in turn
affects tourism and has a tremendous ripple effect on our local
economy.”

Early last week, the memorandum of agreement between the US Army Corps
of Engineers and the state of North Carolina to pay for the project was
approved.
