BEMC offering $5,000 reward for vandalism that led to outage

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction in a break-in at the BEMC Hickman's Crossing substation in Calabash. Whoever broke in vandalized the substation, which resulted in a power outage. About 3,600 co-op members in the Calabash area were without power from 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to 12:20 a.m. Wednesday as a result.

BEMC is investigating the incident aggressively, but the company is note releasing specfic details about the break-in and vandalism.

"Trespassing on BEMC property and causing damage to our electric distribution system that results in any loss of service to our co-op members is not acceptable," BEMC CEO Robert W. Leavitt, Jr., said in a statement. "We are pursuing this investigation to the fullest extent, but at this time, we don’t want to impact the case by disclosing details. Protecting the reliability of our system is a responsibility we take seriously and that’s why we’re offering this reward."

North Carolina Criminal Law defines injuring wires and other fixtures of telephone, telegraph and electric-power companies as a felony.

BEMC encourages anyone to come forward if they saw or heard something that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the trespassing vandals. Call (910) 754-4391 or (800) 842-5871 if you have any information on this incident.
