WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Landfall Clubhouse was filled with women donning red dresses today to raise money and awareness of the number one killer of women: heart disease.
The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation hosted the Red Dress Luncheon and Fashion Show. The funds from the event are used locally to fund cholesterol screenings and risk assessments throughout the community to all women from all walks of life.
"Heart disease and basically heart attacks are the number one killer of women. Most people think it's cancer. It's actually heart attacks, because women don't know the signs and the symptoms," NHRMC Foundation Executive Director Aline Lasseter said.
According to the American Heart Association, one in five women in the US has some form of heart disease.
