End of summer means less help for some local businesses

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH -- This weekend marks the end of the summer beach season and by most indications, it has been a good one for local businesses.

It's also the time when those businesses lose some employees. Although, some local employers said they won't be losing as many employees as you might expect. Zach Hauser has worked at Sweetwater Surf Shop in Wrightsville Beach for two years.

He said the shop isn't affected too much by the end of summer. "With the fall coming, the tourists start to go home then we get the college students starting to come in and we still sell quite a lot of surf boards."

Hauser said Sweetwater works with a UNCW internship program, so they'll actually gain college students' help rather than lose it. He said, "It's been a great summer. With Labor Day weekend, it was insane with all the people. It was probably one of the busier weekends I've seen this summer."

Jerry Allen owns Robert's Market and Jerry Allen's Bar and Grill. He said, "We'll definitely lose some employees because they're summer employees and they're going back to school. But for the most part, most of our regular full time people will still be here and we have a pretty good local following at both establishments."

Allen says the end of summer doesn't negatively affect him as much as in years past. "Of course you're going to see some changes because we're a summer business, so we slow down some, but it's not dramatic like it used to be in the past. It's becoming more year round in the beach area," he said.
