GRAHAM, NC (AP) -- An Alamance County man will spend at least four years in prison for cheating an elderly woman out of roughly $150,000, mostly in the form of personal loans that he never repaid.
The Times-News of Burlington reports that 54-year-old Michael Eugene Massengill was sentenced after pleading guilty Monday.
Prosecutors say Massengill met the woman when buying some land from her in 2001. Prosecutors say over the next nine years, he borrowed money from her and repeatedly bounced checks meant to repay her.
The woman took out loans herself in order to give Massengill money.
The 82-year-old woman now living in a nursing home could lose the property she and her husband owned since the 1940s because of the debt she incurred on Massengill's behalf.
