CARY, NC (AP) -- Another North Carolina state House member who was a leader during the chamber's Democratic control won't run for re-election.
Rep. Jennifer Weiss of Cary announced Tuesday she is taking a break from politics and will focus on other facets of her life. The 52-year-old Weiss has been in the House since 1999 and was previously a co-chairwoman of the House Finance Committee. More recently she's been speaking out against policies pushed by the new Republican majority.
New GOP-drawn boundaries for legislative seats placed her in the same suburban Wake County district with first-term Republican Rep. Tom Murry. She plans to serve out her term through the end of the year.
House Minority Leader Joe Hackney, Rep. Phil Haire and former Rules Committee Chairman Bill Owens are also not running again.
