Sen. Stevens of Cary won't seek re-election

READ MORE:

CARY, NC (AP) - One of the chief-budget writers in the North Carolina Senate will not seek re-election, saying it's time to move to another chapter in his life.

Republican Sen. Richard Stevens of Cary announced his decision Friday.

The former Wake County manager is in his fifth term in the Legislature and was one of the few Republicans to have Senate leadership jobs when the chamber was under Democratic rule. The 63-year-old Stevens received one of the top chairman's positions on the Senate Appropriations Committee when the GOP took the majority after the 2010 elections.

Stevens said some of his fondest memories in elected office are when lawmakers from both parties worked together to move North Carolina forward.

His decision comes just before the candidate filing period begins at noon Monday.
