WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Rep. Mike McIntyre wants to return to Washington instead of taking a new office in Raleigh.

In a statement today, McIntyre, a Democrat from Lumberton, announced he will not run for governor. He had said he was interested in the state's highest office after Gov. Bev Perdue announced she would not seek re-election.

"My heart is in public service, and I love North Carolina," McIntyre said. "I am honored to have had my name considered for governor, but there is simply not enough time between now and May 8 to construct the type of campaign that I would have liked to establish. I appreciate the many kind words and encouragement I have received. My plan is to run for re-election to Congress."

McIntyre, part of the Blue Dog Coalition of conservative Democrats, is seeking his ninth term in Congress. Republicans Ilario Pantano and David Rouzer are competing to challenge him in November.

Candidate filing begins Monday.
