Brunswick deputy cleared in December shooting

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The district attorney says a Brunswick County Sheriff's deputy was justified when he shot two people late last year. Both survived their injuries.

Sgt. Brian Tully shot Timothy and Casey Thompson December 26, 2011, when he responded to a call that Casey was attacking her husband with a knife. District Attorney Jon David said that fact led to the potential need to use deadly force.

After reviewing evidence, including a SBI investigation, and a 911 call of the incident, David concluded that Sgt. Tully observed a situation where he needed to use deadly force immediately.

Casey Thomas is charged with felony assault. She is still waiting to go to trial.
