NC Transportation Museum offers look behind scenes

SPENCER, NC (AP) -- Visitors to the N.C. Transportation Museum can take a peek behind the scenes for the first time in 25 years.

The Division of Cultural Resources says those who visit the museum and its "Behind the Scenes" tour can stroll through the large Back Shop, view the Roundhouse Restoration bays and enjoy a tour through the private rail car of James Duke.

The tour also includes an up-close look at the DC-3 Potomac Pacemaker, undergoing cosmetic restoration in the Back Shop. The World War II-era airplane was used for passenger travel by Piedmont Airlines and still bears the company's logo. The Potomac Pacemaker is part of the history of the Winston-Salem based airline.
