Cape Fear Pride: Sunset Beach and the Kindred Spirit Mailbox

READ MORE: Cape Fear Pride: Sunset Beach and the Kindred Spirit Mailbox
A walk down the shore of one Brunswick County beach town will bring you to Bird Island. There, a lone mailbox holds the private thoughts of visitors, who are brought together in spirit. Inside the Kindred Spirit mailbox is a notebook for passing beachcombers to leave their thoughts. Although it seems like a lonely spot, this bench invites visitors to get to know the people who've been there before. On a dune at Bird Island, right off the western end of Sunset Beach, sits a mailbox with no home or family attached. "You could really feel like you are away and I think that's the main attraction to this place is to sit here and look and not be distracted by anything related to human beings," John Kiser, a visitor who's left messages in the Kindred Spirit mailbox said. Outside it says "Kindred Spirit", and inside, holds the prayers, thoughts, and messages for all who choose to write. "People put addresses dates telephone numbers other peoples names references to friends long gone family boyfriends girlfriends husbands wives, general philosophy," Kiser said. No need to bring your own pen and paper. They are already there for you. If you don't feel like writing, you can simply sit and read what others have shared. "It just puts you in touch with other people and, I don't know, you just find that there is a common humanity," Vacationer Bob Belisle said. Locals and vacationers alike say the Kindred Spirit mailbox is one of the nuances that makes Bird Island and Sunset Beach unique. Some people say it's just an outgrowth of the beauty and serenity of the small beach town. "It's a place to let go of everything that might weigh you down in life and just be healed by the beauty of nature and all that God has given us," Ceese Belisle, a vacationer and journal-writer said. If you can't make it to the actual Kindred Spirit mailbox, there are still ways to share your thoughts with others. Online blogs have put the mailbox on the information super highway.
