JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- One day after a fire tore apart an Onslow County family, leaving them homeless, donations are flooding in.

Nothing can replace what the fire took from the Pittman family. Three of the eight children died and several others are still in the hospital, but there is an outpouring of generosity from people not just in Onslow County, but all over the country.

From food and toys to money, folks are stepping up to help out the Pittmans. A fire early yesterday morning destroyed their home in Jacksonville, killing three younger children.

Since then, donations have steadily come into the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. Calls have come from as far away as New York and Florida. Sheriff Ed Brown says one family has donated a temporary home for the Pittmans. Another has offered three burial plots.

"This is what it's all about in America," Sheriff Brown said. "We may have the wrong impression when we look and think everybody's bad. No they're not."

Investigators believe the fire started with an electrical short in the kitchen.

Three of the Pittman children are still recovering at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. One was treated and released. Another sibling and their mother are at the burn unit in Chapel Hill.
