The iPod is the most popular device for listening to music and it's changed over it's six-year lifespan. When the first generation iPod was launched back in October of 2001, Apple sold just 125,000 of the little white music boxes. Since then more than 110 million iPods have made their way into the hands of music lovers across the world. According to market research firms, the iPod is the most popular platform for portable music and video, claiming about 80 percent of the growing MP3 player market. The player's popularity has helped move the iTunes music store to the front of the industry, too. Recent reports show that iTunes has sold more than three billion songs since it launched. The recent addition of the iPhone -- which combines iPod functionality with a cell phone -- has helped boost interest in the next generation of music devices. Apple says it hopes to claim a piece of the billion-device-a-year cell phone market in addition to continuing its dominance of the digital music sector.
