Fourth case of rabies this year in New Hanover County

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County Animal Control says the fourth case of rabies this year in the county has been confirmed.

Friday Animal Control was called to pick up a raccoon that had fought with two dogs. The dogs were handled afterward by several family members, which resulted in potential exposure for them. The dogs did have a current rabies vaccination. The raccoon was transported to the State Lab, where officials confirmed the virus Monday.

Animal Control officers will canvass the area to educate the public on the importance of their pets being current with their rabies vaccination.
