Jacksonville woman sentenced in father's stabbing death

JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) -- A Jacksonville woman will spend at least nine years in prison for the 2010 stabbing death of her father.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports that 27-year-old Talani Silveria will receive credit for the year and a half she spent in jail before the trial.

Silveria entered an Alford plea to second-degree murder in the death of her father, 63-year-old Tala Masoli. Under an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges a jury would likely reach a guilty verdict.

Masoli was stabbed in the back at his home in July 2010 and died in the hospital five days later.

Silveria's lawyer, Scott Jack, says she had not been taking her anti-psychotic medication at the time of the stabbing.
