U.S. attack in Baghdad reportedly kills 14

READ MORE:

BAGHDAD (AP) -- U.S. and Iraqi forces in Baghdad have reportedly killed at least 14 people.

The military says the Americans and Iraqis attacked a suspected terrorist cell early today based on intelligence information. A statement says as the soldiers moved in, they came under fire from more than a dozen Shiite militiamen firing from rooftops. The military says the American and Iraqi troops answered with, quote, "well-aimed and suppressive fire." They also called in air support.

Two buildings identified as "enemy strongholds" sustained major damage.

Police in the neighborhood say 14 civilians were killed. Some residents claim as many as 27 people died.

One woman says helicopters "bombed" her house, killing her son and husband as they slept.

The military statement makes no mention of civilian casualties, saying only "positively identified armed gunmen" were targeted.
