NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- There will not be a Republican primary for the 19th District state House seat after all. Kure Beach Mayor Dean Lambeth says he is dropping out of the race because of health reasons.

Lambeth told WWAY this morning he suffered a slight stroke last week and suffers from other complications from his diabetes. As a result, he said he is under "doctor's orders not to proceed." Lambeth also said he needs to finish the business he promised the voters of Kure Beach.

Lambeth and New Hanover County Commission Chair Ted Davis, both Republicans, filed to run for the seat last week after Rep. Danny McComas said he would not seek another term.

New Hanover County Elections Director Marvin McFadyen tells us because Lambeth has a challenger, his name will stay on the ballot and he could possibly win. Lambeth says he does not think that will happen, because Davis is a great choice for the people. Davis will face Kure Beach Commissioner Emile Swearingen, a Democrat.

"The fact that Emile Swearingen is running, she knows nothing about conservative dealings in the House of Representatives," Lambeth said. "She will give money away, so I don't think we need to give her a chance to represent North Carolina."
