WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Eaton Elementary will reopen tomorrow after water damage forced it to close today. Students will be on a two-hour delay, according to New Hanover County Schools. Teachers and staff should report at normal times.
Empty chairs and fans were the only things in classrooms at Eaton Elementary School in Wilmington today. the school was closed because of major water damage to several classrooms.
The school district says an issue with the school's boiler system, similar to an air condition leak, caused water to escape on to ceiling tiles which collapsed, setting off the school's emergency alarm early this morning.
Maintenance workers could hear gushing and see pools of water when they entered the building.
"It's a big concern any time that we have to cancel school because of a mechanical situation," New Hanover County School Maintenance Director Chris Peterson said. "Our hopes are that everything will be ready for tomorrow."
