UPDATE: Boil water advisory ends for Aqua North Carolina customers along River Road

UPDATE MONDAY, 12:50 p.m.: On Saturday, March 10, 2012, a water main break on River Road interrupted service to about 200 customers in a small section of New Hanover in River Oaks, the Sanctuary, Rouen Court and scattered homes on River Road. Aqua North Carolina, Inc. (Aqua) repaired the 8-inch water main and restored service to affected customers by 8 p.m. Saturday. A precautionary boil water advisory was issued until tests could be performed on water samples collected after the repair was completed. Those test results, received today, showed no bacteria, and Aqua has lifted the precautionary boil water advisory effective today. Customers no longer need to boil water used for consumption.

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -- Aqua North Carolina, Inc. (Aqua) crews have been on site this afternoon working to repair an 8-inch water main break along River Road. Aqua expects to have repairs made and water service restored by 8 p.m.

Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increase the potential for the introduction of bacteria into the water system. Therefore, the Division of Environmental Health advises that, when water service is restored, customers must boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or used bottled water. Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that might be present in the water. Water for bathing, washing or outside use does not need to be boiled.

Once water service is restored, Aqua will flush the water main to ensure that adequate chlorine levels are re-established. In addition, Aqua will collect water samples to verify the absence of bacteria that might have been introduced into the water system during the break and repairs. We expect to have the results of those water samples on Monday, March 12, 2012. When test results are clear, Aqua will issue another press release indicating that it is no longer necessary to continue to boil your water.

This boil water advisory affects an estimated fewer than 500 customers in River Oaks, the Sanctuary, Rolling Court and scattered homes along River Road. These customers lost water service today and must boil their water before consumption when service is restored.
