Leland Middle School students get first-hand lesson in government

LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- Eighth grade students at Leland Middle School got a first-hand lesson in government this morning.

Leland Middle says it is the only school in the state that holds a mock Congressional hearing. The students showed off their knowledge and understanding of historical, political and constitutional issues in the form of testimony today.

Salma Torres is proud to be an American. The eighth grader understands many of the privileges that come with that distinction.

"I am really happy, since I am the daughter of immigrants, that I have this freedom to be who I want to be and to express myself, to have freedom of expression and to have those rights guaranteed to me," Torres said.

Teacher Meggen Calderwood invited several community leaders to participate in the one-of-a-kind event. The community leaders served as judges and congressional committee members.
