BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Whether it's a police chase or a hurricane, how well emergency responders communicate with each other can mean life or death.

Brunswick County's new public safety radio system VIPER is up and running, but it has a ways to go before all departments are installed.

VIPER is a radio system that allows all emergency responders on the same frequency. The county is still working out a few kinks, but once completed, viper will work much better than the county's old system.

"The old radio system was not designed as a public safety radio system," Brunswick County Emergency Services Director Anthony Marzano said. "It had some inherent limitations to the software that really didn't allow it to achieve its full potential."

The county's fire departments and a few municipal police departments still need to have VIPER installed. It should completely take over emergency communications in the county by the fall.
