WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-- Thousands of children got behind the wheel and explored some of their favorite vehicles Sunday. The Junior League of Wilmington held its annual "Touch a Truck" event which turned out to be a beeping good time. From fire engines, to police cars, to even a helicopter, smiles at the 3rd Annual "Touch a Truck" event were as plentiful as the vehicles on hand. Last year there were just over a 1,000 people at the event, but this year there were over 5,000. The Junior League of Wilmington says they were able to raise over $10,000 to benefit the Blue Ribbon Commission and Sunset Park Elementary. "It's also about meeting the heroes and meeting the people who build, protect and serve the Wilmington community," said Paige Kon, the "Touch a Truck" Chair. "They not only get to see the trucks but they also get the face to face time with these people." Parents say the event was more than just an opportunity to take pictures, it was truly a day of family fun. "This is great fun," said Kristin Miguez. "I have a four-year-old out today and he's just fascinated with all these big trucks." "They were very excited to come but now that they're here, they're having more fun," said Jill Bernstein.
