Experts on both sides of gay marriage debate square off in forum

RALEIGH, N.C., (AP) -- Experts on both sides of the gay marriage
debate in North Carolina are squaring off on the same stage for
what may be the last time before a May 8 vote on a proposed
constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex unions.

The forum at Meredith College in Raleigh brought together legal
scholars and members of the clergy to debate the value of the
amendment and its potential effects on the state.

Maxine Eichner of the University of North Carolina law school
says the law would prevent local governments from giving domestic
partnership benefits and could have other effects.

The Rev. Patrick Wooden of the Upper Room Church of God in
Christ says marriage was created by God to be a union between a man
and a woman.
