WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- "Garden & Gun" is an unlikely sounding magazine. It focuses on telling stories of the south, and this month the magazine set its sights on Wilmington.
The Port City is the feature of an eight-page spread in "Garden and Gun," which combines gardening with outdoor sports in a decidedly southern flavor.
"Wilmington is just a town that, to us, has everything to love," editor-in-chief David DiBenedetto said. "It's a great location. It's great in April and May. We love the connection to the water, the coastal connection. Beyond that there is a great food scene happening there."
The magazine has featured cites from Charleston, SC, to Oxford, MI. This edition is special. It marks the fifth anniversary of the publication.
DiBenedetto says they are looking to set themselves apart in the magazine business.
"I think we're doing something different," he said. "We're writing about the south in a way that it really hasn't been covered before, shining a spotlight on cool places, telling great stories using good photography. The south is filled with wonderful stories. You just have to find them."
The magazine offers a glossy look, but down-home stories telling about people and places throughout the south. DiBenedetto says that's what the magazine liked about Wilmington.
"There's a cool, creative community with the film industry and the theater industry. It's a town that has a lot going on, and it's not on everybody's radar," he said.
The magazine is on the news stands now, and you can see lots of great shots of our city.
