Man killed in Wilmington apartment fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A man confined to a wheelchair is dead after a morning fire at a Wilmington apartment complex. Fire investigators say Billy Lunesford, 56, died.

Relatives say Lunesford was wheelchair-bound after he was shot in the back of the head in the early 1990s.

The fire started around 10:30 a.m. at Glover Plaza on Little John Court. The complex belongs to the Wilmington Housing Authority. According to the WHA website, Glover Plaza is a development for the elderly and disabled

The fire damaged four other units in the building.

During their search of the building, firefighters found the resident of another unit sleeping. Firefighters helped that person from the building. They also rescued a dog from one of the apartments.
