This is such a shame to see the uncontrolled expansion of Wilmington and has caused a need to increase the tax base and milk more tax dollars to cover ill conceived expansion expenses and infrastructure costs.
This Ponzi program goes bust when the economy falters as it has just done and then the politicians scramble to cover the costs they built up in the good years.
It was not long ago that you could get off the newly completed I-40 and drive down the forest lined college road, pass the college and then there would be the Long Leaf Mall. After that is was nice driving along the forest lined road until you reached Monkey Junction and Burger King. The drive to Carolina Beach was worth the time and it was really such a quaint gem of a place that exist no more.
Wilmington and New Hanover County has now become is a near copy of Northern New Jersey Chaos with a twist of Long Island. Brunswick County is sinking into the marsh under the weight of their growth and their glory days are over as well.
I am starting to think that this beautiful area that I thought I might retire in has now become what many have escaped up north and the inertia of development and higher taxes is irreversible and the has made me and many others reconsider staying.
