WPD arrests 8 from NJ for heroin ring

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- For the second time in a week Wilmington Police say they've taken a load of heroin off the streets. Police arrested eight people from New Jersey after uncovering a large heroin trafficking ring here in the Port City.

James Thomas, Tykeem Thomas, Steven Poole, Reginald Willis, Leah Porter, Ashley Tate, Destiny Decosta and Aalivah Marable are in jail after police found them with more than 2,900 bags of heroin with a street value of about $60,000.

"We have other sources of heroin coming into the region that we are actively working right now, so this is only one piece," Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said. "To think that New Jersey and their residents can come down here and wreak havoc on us, well we're going to wreak havoc on them, and we've already started."

Evangelous says this is just a drop in the bucket in terms of getting heroin off the streets, but it's a start.
