NC college's students propose fee increase

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) -- While many college students in North Carolina have protested the rising cost of higher education, students at Guilford College are saying they should pay more.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports that the college's Community Senate has made a formal proposal that the school raise activity fees by $100 over the next two years. Student leaders want the revenue to bolster the college's financial aid program.

North Carolina provides some state support for residents who attend private colleges. Guilford is losing $2.5 million in that aid because of budget cuts by the General Assembly.

The college's board of trustees will consider the proposal in June.

Guilford students currently pay nearly $40,000 a year in tuition, fees, accommodations and supplies.
