If they build a ballpark to draw a team from the Braves here in Wilmington, then they'd better cover their tracks by signing an agreement where the Braves promise to keep a team here for 25 years.
Look to Madison, WI. In 1982 they built a stadium on the promise of the Oakland A's to bring a Class A team there called the Madison Muskies. The A's kept the team there for just 11 years and moved them to Michigan. Madison (whose population was 200K) was left scrambling to find a new organization and convinced St. Louis to bring a team in 1994. They stayed for just one season and in 1995, the stadium sat empty. They haven't been able to bring in a MLB farm team since. From 1996, they've had independent teams not affiliated with the MLB, but they don't draw nearly the same interest... nor the revenue.
The Atlanta Braves are leaving VA for a reason. What's in place to guarantee they don't walk out on Wilmington in a few years? If you build it they will come... but if you don't get a commitment in writing, they will go too!
