Area native killed in Hawaii hit-and-run

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A Cape Fear native has been killed in a hit-and-run collision in Hawaii. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Brody Winslow died in the accident Wednesday in Hilo.

Our sister station KITV in Honolulu reports police said the 20-year-old, whose Facebook page says is from Wrightsville Beach, was hit shortly before 7:29 a.m. Wednesday. Alison E. Talyor, 40, of Volcano, HI, was reportedly driving a 2005 Toyota Tacoma when she struck Winslow as he rode his bike. The Tacoma then hit and broke a utility pole.

The driver allegedly drove off. She was later stopped by an off-duty police officer.

Winslow was pronounced dead at a hospital at 8:16 a.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Taylor was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, accident involving death or serious injury, driving under the influence of intoxicants, failure to render aid and driving with a suspended license.

Friends have set up a Facebook page to pay tribute to Winslow, who was second-team All-Area in soccer as a senior at New Hanover High in 2009.
