WILMINGTON -- More improvements are on the way at Wilmington International Airport. Congressman Mike McIntyre presented a check to the airport for almost $2.5 million Wednesday. The federal money will be used for runway enhancements and security improvements. ILM is North Carolina's fourth largest airport and is growing rapidly. It's projected to serve 23 percent more customers this year than it did last year. That means a possibility of increased security risks without proper federal funding. McIntyre said, "Unfortunately, when you have a security risk at any airport you always want to enhance the perimeter security and also make the roads around here safer in addition to the runways themselves." Officials say nearly three quarters of ILM's customers are commercial or business passengers who help stimulate the local economy.
