Two more cases of rabies confirmed in New Hanover Co.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The state lab has confirmed two more cases of rabies in raccoons in New Hanover County. They are the seventh and eighth cases of the disease in the county this year.

One case was a raccoon captured at a business on Market Street downtown Saturday. The other case happened on Shorewood Hills Drive.

In that second case, a veterinarian notified New Hanover County Animal Services that a dog had fought with a raccoon Sunday. The owner handled the dog's collar after the fight, which resulted in potential exposure. The dog was not current with its rabies vaccine, so he was brought to Animal Services until the raccoon could be tested. Today, the state lab confirmed the raccoon had rabies. The dog will remain at Animal Services for a six-month quarantine.
