Thompson to focus on family, business after primary loss

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It's Your Voice, Your Vote, and the people spoken.

A surprise to many, New Hanover County Commissioner Jason Thompson will not be on the board next year. After failing to win a nomination in the Republican race, Thompson says he should have worked harder to get votes.

"It's my fault," Thompson said. "The responsibility lies on me. I probably should have worked harder than I did, but I did what I thought was best for the circumstances, and it just wasn't enough."

As the votes rolled in Tuesday night, Thompson says he was surprised by the numbers. He says he's used to winning, with five victories under his belt for both Wilmington City Council and New Hanover County Commission. He says his experience was the main thing driving his campaign, but it was not enough.

"I just felt that we needed some stability and some leadership, and I thought I could provide it, but evidently the voters thought different," Thompson said.

Thompson says he will continue to serve the county until his term is up this winter, and then that's it. He says he plans to refocus his energy on his family and his business.

"You know what, I have 12 long years of serving this community, and I look back on that. I can give you a whole long list that I did that I'm proud of. Everything's going to be fine," he said.

Another Republican-controlled seat may come open in November if Commissioner Rick Catlin wins his run for the state House. If that happens, Thompson could be appointed to the County Commission, which he said he would consider if the opportunity came up.
