You're right. And if people had done their research they would know that gay marriage is already illegal in NC. If this amendment had failed, gay people couldn't just go to the courthouse and get married, that's what they don't understand. But then again you had to actually care about who and what you were voting for to do research. People just don't educate themselves before they check a box.
