WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- Thursday night sports featured the Hoggard girls lacrosse team against undefeated Green Hope in the Elite Eight of the state playoffs. We also talked to New Hanover girls soccer coach Al Pastore about the end of his great coaching career. We previewed the season opener for the Wilmington Sharks summer league baseball team, as well. The Sharks start their season off at home on May 29th. We also got an update on the UNCW women’s golf team after the first round of play at the NCAA golf regional in Columbus, Ohio. The UNCW baseball team was also in action on Thursday night. The Seahawks beat William & Mary 4-1 in Williamsburg, VA. On top of that, we got an update on former UNCW basketball player Mark Byington. The former College of Charleston assistant joined the Virginia Tech coaching staff on Thursday.

FORMER UNCW BASKETBALL PLAYER MARK BYINGTON JOINED THE COACHING STAFF AT VIRGINIA TECH ON THURSDAY. BYINGTON SPENT THE PAST NINE SEASONS AS AN ASSISTANT COACH AT COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON.

IN GIRLS LACROSSE STATE PLAYOFF ACTION GREEN HOPE DEFEATED HOGGARD 19-7 ON THURSDAY. GREEN HOPE'S KATE MURPHY SET A SCHOOL RECORD WITH 6 ASSISTS IN THE WIN. THE FALCONS ADVANCE TO THE FINAL FOUR OF THE GIRLS LACROSSE STATE PLAYOFFS.

ALSO IN GIRLS LACROSSE, CARDINAL GIBBONS DEFEATED ASHLEY 23-13 ON THURSDAY. PEYTON LECOMPTE AND AMIE EFTING EACH HAD 3 GOALS FOR THE SCREAMIN’ EAGLES. HANNAH WEST HAD 20 SAVES ON 43 SHOTS IN GOAL FOR ASHLEY.

IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE GIRLS SOCCER STATE PLAYOFFS, WHITEVILLE SHUT OUT SOUTH COLUMBUS 10-0 ON THURSDAY. WHITEVILLE ADVANCES TO PLAY CLINTON ON SATURDAY AT 7PM.

IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE SOFTBALL STATE PLAYOFFS, WHITEVILLE DEFEATED EAST DUPLIN 2-0 ON THURSDAY.

IN FIRST ROUND BASEBALL PLAYOFF ACTION WEST BLADEN EDGED ST. PAULS 2-1 ON THURSDAY. KYLE MEISMER HAD 13 STRIKEOUTS ON THE MOUND FOR THE KNIGHTS. WEST BLADEN WILL PLAY THE WINNER OF FRIDAY'S NORTH PITT - EAST DUPLIN GAME.

THE UNCW BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATED WILLIAM & MARY 4-1 IN WILLIAMSBURG, VA ON THURSDAY. HUNTER RIDGE, TYLER MOLINARO AND JAKE KOENIG ALL HIT HOMERUNS FOR THE SEAHAWKS. TYLER MCSWAIN GOT THE WIN ON THE MOUND FOR UNCW. THE SEAHAWKS IMPROVED THEIR CONFERENCE RECORD TO 20-5 WITH THE WIN. THE TEAM WILL PLAY THE SECOND GAME OF THEIR SERIES WITH WILLIAM & MARY TOMORROW AT 7PM.

THE UNCW WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM IS IN 21ST PLACE AFTER ONE ROUND OF THE NCAA GOLF REGIONAL IN COLUMBUS, OHIO. SENIOR SOFIA HAGSUND HAD THE LOW ROUND FOR THE SEAHAWKS ON THURSDAY, CARDING A 78.

THE WILMINGTON SEA DAWGS ARE BACK AT HOME ON FRIDAY NIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A MONTH. THE SEA DAWGS WILL HOST BIG TEXAS AT 7PM IN THE SCHWARTZ CENTER.

IN THE NBCA PLAYOFFS THE PHILADELPHIA 76ERS BEAT THE CHICAGO BULLS 79-78 ON THURSDAY TO ADVANCE TO THE EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS. THE 76ERS BECOME THE FIFTH NO. 8 SEED IN NBA HISTORY TO ELIMINATE A NO. 1 SEED IN THE PLAYOFFS.

IN THE NBA PLAYOFFS THE BOSTON CELTICS ELIMINATED THE ATLANTA HAWKS 83-80 IN GAME 6 AT HOME ON THURSDAY.

IN THE NBA PLAYOFFS TY LAWSON SCORED 32 POINTS TO LEAD DENVER TO A 113-96 WIN OVER THE LA LAKERS. GAME 7 OF THIS SERIES WILL BE PLAYED ON SATURDAY IN LOS ANGELES.

IN PGA ACTION, IAN POULTER AND MARTIN LAIRD LEAD THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP AT 7-UNDER PAR AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF PLAY. TIGER WOODS IS NINE SHOTS BACK AFTER POSTING A 2-OVER-PAR 74 IN THURSDAY'S ROUND.
