Blending the vintage with today is a specialty at UNCW. Saturday night, the University will host a tribute to the musical genius of Rodgers and Hart. Banu Gibson and her trio are back in town to celebrate the music of an era gone by, but not forgotten. "It's absolutely the wonderful music of Rodgers and Hart, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Great American songbook...Classic tunes that we have to keep the American public listening to," Gibson said. Gibson rehearsed Friday with accompanist David Boeddinghaus in preparation for Saturday night's tribute to Rodgers and Hart at UNC- Wilmington. Gibson says her mission is to "bring a lot of these songs to the next generation, songs like 'My Funny Valentine,' 'Bewitched,' and 'Lady is a Tramp." UNCW Professor Phil Furia will narrate the show, telling the stories of the celebrated team of Rodgers and Hart. UNCW director of cultural arts, Norman Bemelmans, anticipates a wonderful evening. "We had Banu Gibson and her trio here a couple of years ago. We did a similar program with Cole Porter, and it was so successful and met with such overwhelming acclamation," Bemelmans said. Gibson adds, "It's so much fun to sing and to hear, it's gonna be a great time!"
