NC House members recall late Rep. "B" Holt

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Members of the North Carolina House recalled a late Alamance County lawmaker for her courage and fighting spirit for women and for Democrats during her political career.

The House passed a resolution Monday night remembering the life and accomplishments of former Rep. Bertha "B'' Holt, who died in 2010 at age 93.

Holt served in the House from 1975 through 1994. She led the effort in the early 1990's to repeal the law that had said husbands couldn't be charged with raping their wives. She backed abortion rights and worked unsuccessfully for North Carolina lawmakers to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. constitution. Holt was also active in the Episcopal Church.

Rep. Alice Bordsen of Alamance County called Holt a virtual street fighter for women's rights.
