RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A school-choice group that won major victories at the North Carolina General Assembly last year is rallying in Raleigh to seek help on another initiative.
Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina organized a rally scheduled for Tuesday near the Legislative Building to gather support for what's called the North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship Program.
The program would offer tax credits to corporations that give to nonprofits, which in turn provide private-school scholarships to lower-income families. The group says eight states have such programs.
Parents for Educational Freedom scored successes in 2011 with legislation that lifted the cap on charter schools and provided tax credits to parents of children with disabilities for services they need outside the public schools.
