Laney's new basketball coach to hold tournament to honor veteran coach Fred Lynch

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Nathan Faulk is the new head basketball coach at Laney High School. Faulk recently replaced Fred Lynch on the bench at Laney. Lynch will continue to serve as the Laney director of athletics.

It appears a summer basketball event at Laney is one of the first items on Nathan Faulk's plate as he makes the transition from South View to Laney. The event will be held June 25-27.

"I'm starting the 1st Annual Fred Lynch Invitational, much like the Miller Invitation I ran at South View," Faulk said. "It will be an all day affair, games beginning at 8 a.m. and running till 8 p.m. Each team plays three games a day the first two daysm and a single elimination tournament on the third day. Locations will be Laney High, Trask Middle and Holly Shelter Middle. I have close to 20 teams committed. Last year in the Miller we had close to 40! I just wanted to get at least half those teams the first year out of the gate. Some of the teams committed to play in the Fred Lynch Invitational are Sanderson, Cape Fear Academy, East Bladen, Topsail, West Brunswick, Wallace-Rose Hill, Northside, Jacksonville, Laney, Hoke, Apex, Hoggard, Clinton, Union, Trask and Ashley. It's free to the public! Great summer basketball to see where our teams are and may be in the future. I do have some spots available for high school teams still looking to sign up. It is open to women's teams as well, but I haven't received a strong interest so I'm not sure if I will have any women's teams. It's a great chance for college coaches JUCO, D2 and D3 to come out and catch some local basketball talent."
