Threat of storm not dampening Memorial Day at the beach

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and many people are excited to spend the long weekend outside, but those outdoor activities may have to wait.

A low pressure system off the east coast has some people worried, but businesses in Ocean Isle Beach say they are ready for the less-than-perfect beach weather.

"We're very prepared in being able to deal with it, and if there is an emergency or is something they need to know, we're also prepared with notification systems that we can notify them if they need to know any specifics," said realtor and Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith.

Locals say the rainy conditions are sometimes a part of life at the beach. They say they're excited it's finally summer and understand that sometimes the storms come along with the season.

"We have been preparing for this day for the last nine months," restaurant owner Ray Harris Jr. said. "The summer is here. Thank goodness."

Other than taking extra precautions at the beach, like being aware of rip currents, many say you can enjoy your time off rain or shine.

The official start of the 2012 Hurricane Season is still a week away, but many people say they're not going to let a little rain ruin their holiday weekend.
