WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A group of Cape Fear Community College students took its classroom knowledge to the field.

Carpentry and HVAC students teamed up to build a three-bedroom house from the ground up on the school's North Campus. The students say they are proud of their accomplishment.

After a year and a half of hard work, students put the finishing touches on today.

"There was nothing here other than the cinder blocks," student Donna Jordan said. "We ordered the lumber, cut the lumber, nailed the lumber."

At just more han 1,000 square feet, the home has three bedrooms and two baths with an exterior of cedar planking built to withstand 130 mph winds. The project is designed to teach students about the fundamentals of building.

"The idea was to get a structure built that the students would get as much knowledge as they possibly could of the residential building process," CFCC carpentry instructor David Cameron said.

Cameron says the project taught students about reading blueprints and estimating costs of materials.

Students say the project was a lot of work but in the end it was a lot of fun.

"It's awesome," Jordan said. "I'm gonna bring my friends by. You gotta go see it. I helped build that."

The home will be auctioned off in the next few weeks. Proceeds will go back to the program to cover costs for a project next year.
